Disability Rights of New York – Transitioning from High School to Adulthood
Mar 29 @ 12:00 pm – 2:00 pm
Transition Training
From High School to Adulthood
Date/Time: Wednesday, March 29, 2023
Time: 12:00 PM – 2:00 PM
The end of school can be a challenging time for students in special education and their loved ones. In this training, we will go over what that transition looks like, and will work to develop some tools to assist caregivers in navigating it. Join us for a demystifying discussion about this often-feared process. Presented by:
John Clausson, Wildwood School
John Clausson is the Young Adult Program Coordinator at Wildwood School, where he supervises the Transition Readiness Department. With a deep commitment to supporting students with disabilities, John has dedicated his career to facilitating the transition process. He brings extensive experience from his work in OPWDD day services and the school environment as a social worker. Through these experiences, John has gained a nuanced understanding of the challenges students with different abilities face in transitioning after school and has developed effective strategies for preparing them for post-secondary success.
Sheri Gaylord, Wildwood Programs
Sheri Gaylord joined Wildwood Programs in 2014 as an Educational Resource Specialist working with families and community partners, helping them to understand the special education process, the educational rights of students, and how to foster collaborative working relationships with school teams. In her current role as the School Age Family and Community Engagement (FACE) Center Director, Sheri’s work with parents, families, school districts, and community partners focuses on promoting meaningful change within the educational system, building collaborative and meaningful family-school-community relationships, and improving outcomes for students with disabilities. Sheri has spent the last 21 years navigating disability-related systems and advocating for her children, ensuring they received appropriate services.
All trainings will have closed captioning. ASL interpretation available upon request.
